So the 2nd round of proofs has arrived, and as expected, there were additional changes to be made. The cover looks amazing, and I’m really happy with the new photo, but after finding a misplaced comma, I was left with no choice but to go over the entire book with a fine-tooth comb. It’s funny, but now I think I understand why musicians don’t listen to their own records, all they hear are the mistakes.
At the time that I wrote each of the stories, they all had a different meaning to me. Some were like children that needed protection and nurturing, and others were like bad cousins that you hated visiting, but they were family nonetheless. I’m not sure how many times I have read each story, but I’m sure it’s in the hundreds. I wonder if I can even look at them with a critical eye at this juncture. It’s even gotten to the point where I get to a particular story and I get that “oh no, not you again” feeling. There are even a few characters that make me think… “I should have killed you when I had the chance.” However, there are still three stories in the collection that make me think… “wow, you can write after all.” Those are my babies. I won’t reveal which ones they are, but I’m looking forward to see which ones YOU like.
Anyway, this is the last round of edits, no matter what. I’m looking forward to moving on. If there are still mistakes after this round, hey, what can you do? Art isn’t perfect, and I’m not either. Thanks for all the encouragement. I hope I live up to your expectations.
See you on Split Rock Road,
